CCP’s 13 Artists chosen

The Cultural Center of the Philippines announces 2006’s recipients of the CCP Thirteen Artists Awards, periodically conferred to progressive young artists.

Out of 59 impressive nominations, the panel of judges -- composed of Brenda Fajardo, Ramon ES Lerma, Vita Sarenas and Sid Gomez Hildawa -- unanimously selected the following: Ronald Anading, Jeho Bitancor, Mariano Ching, Lena Cobangbang, Daniel Coquilla, Luisito Cordero, Lyra Garcellano, Eugene Jarque, Jayson Oliveria, Gary-Ross Pastrana, Yasmin Sison-Ching, Ma. Christina Valdezco and Jevijoe Vitug.

The winners’ works will be featured in a group exhibition at the CCP Main Gallery, which opens on September 28 at 5:30PM with awarding ceremonies at the CCP Main Lobby. Former recipients Karen Ocampo Flores and Noel Cuizon will curate the show.

Named in honor of the pioneering group of 13 Modernists in Philippine art, the CCP Thirteen Artists started in 1970 as an exhibition series and has developed into a triennial awards program well regarded by the artistic community. What has characterized the work of Thirteen Artists awardees then and now is a fresh visual language, innovative solutions to artistic concerns, and sustained creative output.

Don’t you hate those moments when you don’t speak up when you should? Well after the moment has passed, you kick yourself for not having done anything? Maybe you didn’t want a bad situation to become worse. Maybe you didn’t want to lower yourself to the level of the jerk who had been rude to you or your companion. Maybe it’s not your style to speak out. Maybe you were too shocked to react.

I fucking HATE those moments.

I am at my bank, waiting for my number to be called. I keep myself occupied by observing everyone else: the tellers, the guards, the other customers. A middle-aged Caucasian man walks in and I spend a few minutes trying to figure out his nationality. Before long, my attention is diverted elsewhere.

Some time later, having completed my transaction, I step out and head to my car. There’s a white car parked behind mine, blocking my exit, so I ask one of the security guards to see to it. He disappears into the bank and in a few moments the white dude I had been observing earlier steps out. The car is his, it seems. He opens the door and gets in.

My right side mirror is askew and I lean forward to adjust it. Suddenly the white car parks beside me. “What are you waiting for? Don’t you know how to drive, you idiot?” I jerk my head in the direction of the voice and see the man looking at me from his car window. “What the fuck did you say?” I manage to shout, despite my surprise. “You heard me!” he says, and slams his door shut. I step out of my car. “Who the fuck do you think you are to talk to me like that?” I demand. His reply is amazing: “A white man, that’s what.”

His German accent is icing on the cake. I’m so mad I don’t even bother to lock my car. I follow him into the bank, giving him hell. Everybody turns to look. The guard holds me back and tries to calm me down as I attempt to make it loud and clear to everyone present that there is a Nazi in their midst. This is probably the first time a Filipino – a member of a race that has proven time and again to be too passive for its own good – has reacted in anger to his insults. There is fear in his face as he puts up a brave front, waving me off and saying “Go on home, boy.”

My frustration can’t get any greater. The fucking bastard is being protected by the very people he looks down upon. I flick him the bird and shout a few more insults his way before storming off.

As I drive away, frustrated and fuming, I manage to congratulate myself for giving the arschloch a piece of my mind. There have been too many moments in my life wherein I let pricks get away with rudeness and bad manners. But ignorant jerks like that deserve more than angry words and an extended middle finger. I pull over and, from the side of the road, choose a good-sized rock. I deposit it on the floor of the car and make a U-turn.

While driving back toward the direction of my bank, I try to decide whether to scratch his car’s paint job or smash the windshield. Should I scrape the word "NAZI" on the passenger side? Will I be able to find a convenient parking space nearby so that I can make a clean getaway? Will I be stopped by a bunch of my countrymen and charged for vandalizing the white supremacist’s car?

My rage has dissipated somewhat and rationality has kicked in. I realize that, since it is my bank, they’d easily be able to trace me.

I make another U-turn and head home.

Because someone in another department screwed up, the company ended up training scads of people who were supposed to start IN AUGUST. (A mistake that cost the company a few million pesos.) So I've been training the same bunch of people for four weeks. The fact that there's a lot of them to monitor is difficult to begin with, but I've also been paired with a junior trainer who still has a lot to learn. After my shift today, though, my boss told me that I'll be handling a new class next week. Aside from it being a grammar class (my favorite!), I can relax a bit because I'll be with three other trainers. And I'll be there not as lead trainer but as a mentor -- none of them have taught our 3-week grammar class yet.

Still, my to-do list has barely changed. I might come over during the weekend to address that. Maybe.

At least it hasn't gotten longer.

2006 has been a crap year for L's fam. Two deaths (Lolo and Bugsy) and her dad had a health scare recently -- a minor stroke. He was at the Philippine Heart Center for five days. His voice was slurring a bit (sounded like he was tipsy) but it was pretty much back to normal by Day 2. Spoke to L a few minutes ago. She mentioned that his sister was brought to the hospital recently, as well. Their brother needs a checkup too, she said.

STOP EATING MEAT, DAMMIT! You'll save a whole lotta lives, including your own. (To his credit, when I had a chance to be alone with my L's dad at the hospital, he was complaining about the lack of healthy dishes served. So ironic that the f**king Philippine Heart Center doesn't provide food that can alleviate/cure their patients heart ailments. Today's special: Death by Ignorance.)

They'll be having a reunion this Sunday and I've made arrangements to have a kick-ass vegan dish there to demolish the usual misconception that far too many people have regarding the supposed unpalatable nature of dishes that are cadaver-deficient.

Intelligent, enlightened people are SO hot. I can share a boatload of ironic wisecracks with them that would otherwise be exercises in futility with anyone else. The downside to this is that the former tend to be politically-aware, and it's tricky to share ironic wisecracks with politically-sensitive people who don't always know when you're being ironic.

Can you spot the person in the photo who might have, at the moment, been feeling a strong desire to wrap his or her hands around the neck of a certain pink-shirted individual and shake the latter like a terrier with a rat in its jaws until he/she is dead, dead, DEAD?

The pic was taken at out team building (2 juin 06, Hotel PonteFino, Batangas). First on the agenda was introductions. Before getting on stage, the members of each group were given time to gather some information from one another so that they could share what they'd learned with the group. I knew the person I was assigned to pretty well so there wasn't that much for me to find out. I had to mention something cute or interesting about her and had decided that I'd share the fact that, after being with the company for more than a year, she'd never been absent.

So we were set. Our turn still wasn't up, though, so we began chatting to pass the time. One of the things she told me was that her ex-fiance would be getting married soon. Bummer.

Fast forward to our turn to introduce each other. True to form, my foot-in-mouth disease kicked in. "This is **** and the interesting thing about her is that her ex-boyfriend is getting married soon!"

Pan from stunned audience to **** wiping tears away, pretending she doesn't want to kick my tactless ass.

My question is: If you were given a gift such as mine, would you keep it to yourself or be ogligated to share it with the world?

My New Not-Gay Friend Eduardo
I have a new friend! If you've read my profile, you know I have a special place in my heart for sissy boys. I use "sissy" with much affection and fondness. My new colleague, Eduardo, is thee perfect straight boy because he is oh-so femmey AND he digs girls. I am a fan of this man. Even If he didn't have this cute girlfriend, I wouldn't jump him because...well, he feels more like a "sister". The guy wears pink, speaks in a falsetto voice when he feels attacked (or when he's kidding around), and is one of the most non-threathening members of the male species I have met thus far. He calls me fff-gurnamal, writes me random poems and sends them to my work e-mail, and he's a VEGAN. He gets bonus points because his reasons are political! A+. I'm excited he's my new friend.

I'm excited too, sweetie! Can't wait to neuter a few dozen bigots with you!

So I finally got one of these babies. And for only 17 grand; paid in two installments. Someone from work had a friend who tired of it (gasp!) a month after he bought it. (He was supposed to offer it to V, but she wasn't at her station and I picked up. Score!) So, aside from making it into this year's CCP 13 Artists Award list, L is also one among 12 applicants from Asia and Europe who got included into the Asia-Europe Comic Project. The invited artists will be meeting in Singapore from 30 July 2006 to 11 August 2006. I know this is a huge deal, and that's why I'm busy looking up things for her to get for me at HMV.

I'm supposed to be working, not downloading lovely, lovely MP3s and writing blog entries, dammit.

In seven days I'll find out if R and I made it into this. When it comes to such finger crossers, I assume nothing, if not the worst. Life has taught me the value of lowering one's expectations to avoid disappointment.

Please please please let us get in!

I'm reading a book about eccentrics (see article here) and am still not convinced if I fall under that demographic. It's kinda like the way people desperately want to call themselves artists. Or writers. There's this cachet to it that many of us want to be associated with. Then again, I suppose not everyone wants to be a weirdo. I've always enjoyed being different, though, despite all the hassle that entails.

Of course, we don't realize we're weird until people (society -- bah!) make us aware of the fact. After being informed of my strangeness more than once in my childhood, I remember asking a friend if I was as odd as people said I was. The response was: "You're weird, but in a nice way."

Here's an excerpt from the book: a list of the 15 characteristics that applied to most eccentrics, more or less in descending order of frequency:
- nonconforming;
- creative;
- strongly motivated by curiosity;
- idealistic: he wants to make the world a better place and the people in it happier;
- happily obsessed with one or more hobbyhorses (usually five or six);
- aware from early childhood that he is different;
- intelligent;
- opinionated and outspoken, convinced that he is right and that the rest of the world is out of step;
- noncompetetive, not in need of reassurance or reinforcement from society;
- unusual in his eating habits and living arrangements;
- not particularly interested in the opinions or company of other people, except in order to persuade them to his -- the correct -- point of view;
- possessed of a mischievous sense of humor;
- single;
- usually the eldest or an only child; and
- a bad speller.

The first five characteristics are the most important and apply to virtually every eccentric.

Okay, so the last two don't apply to me. So what?

Speaking of weirdos, we've hired a new bunch of trainers recently. It's nice to have new faces around the office. I've taken quite a shine to one in particular. First of all, P's into grammar and that racks up a lot of points in my book (of geekdom). She's also very individualistic. One of her main concerns when she was applying was if she'd be able to bare her tattoo at work. (In case you're wondering, it's the words "LOVE THY SELF" -- in reverse Old English calligraphy -- on her forearm.) Heck, as long as you can do the job and have the right attitude, you can have three tits for all we care. Just don't bare them.

Having new people around might bring up an annoying issue, though. I am not looking forward to having to share my workstation. That would suck, big time.

Add this to the list: Weirdos don't like to share, dammit.

The Whirlwind Backpacking Extravaganza: Arrived at Kota Kinabalu on the 7th and stayed till the 10th for a night in Bangkok before moving on to Xiamen, China (on the 11th) and left for Hong Kong on the evening of the 12th. Stayed in HK until the 16th before heading to Macau, where our flight back home waited.

Blogger isn't letting me post all the pics I wanna in one go so don't ask any annoying questions like "Why only two pics per post, huh?", okay?

We were on our way to Clark Int'l. Airport in Pampanga when we spotted this. W was nice enough to pull over so that I could run over to take a picture. Little did he know that, after his numerous enthusiastic attempts to get along with the locals throughout the trip, we'd tease him for being a "phlert".

Our first stop was Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. Among the five destinations on our itinerary, we stayed here the longest. If ever I were to return, I'd like to explore the Kinabalu Forest Park and climb Mount Kinabalu. L would love to laze about on Manukan Island. I regret the fact that we weren't able to go to the Sepilok orangutan sanctuary. (Amazing Race fans would know why I mentioned those sites in succession.)

I've been watching the extended DVD version of Return of the King recently (borrowed -- yes, you may buy me the set) and it's strenghtened my respect for Peter Jackon's passion, artistry, and drive for excellence. Of course, the brilliant, hardworking people who helped him make the film deserve major acknowledgment, as well.

WATCH IT! It's WAY better than the theatrical version!

Suddenly, over a year later, I've dropped out of French class. I was at Module 6 and simply couldn't keep up with le passe compose, much less le plus-que-parfait. It had gotten impractical to continue. With my departure, only Li, Fran, Lynne, and Mimi remain. (April dropped out during Module 5.) I hope Alliance opens a Module 7 class for them even though it's just going to be the four of them.
In the meantime, I'll try to force myself to study on my own. (As if!)

I've been with my company for more than a year now! Yay!

Two recent unfortunate events:
- The grandmother of one of my buddies from work died (he discovered her body) and foul play is suspected. They're under the impression that her houseboy poisoned her.
- The best boss I've ever had has left the company.

His name is Sufjan Stevens, in case you didn't know. He's my favorite discovery from my ongoing adventure in indie folk. Delicate vocals, kinda like Art Garfunkel, but with more oomph and possessing the ability to write his own stuff.

And he plays the banjo!

Sure, he's Christian (GASP!), but I didn't notice until I read about it online. If you're looking for fire and brimstone stuff, you've come to the wrong place. And don't expect ANYTHING like Amy Grant. You wouldn't, really. After all, he did entitle one of his songs They Are Night Zombies!! They Are Neighbors!! They Have Come Back From the Dead!! Ahhhhh!

I read The Da Vinci Code recently, primarily so that I can compare the book with the flick once it shows here. That's pretty much what compelled me to read Golden's book. I plan to read Angels and Demons, the prequel to The Da Vinci Code, soon after. Jon prefers it to TDVC.

We'll see.

I haven't seen a depressing film in quite a while. Watching Ang Lee's latest was like making up for missed opportunities to get that tightening vise on my chest feeling again. Soon after the credits rolled, in an attempt to lift my spirits, I went and played upbeat music, drank wine, and ate.

A gorgeous, important film. But DAMN sad.

The way Heath Ledger transforms himself in this film is amazing. He's this gruff, taciturn mumbler. I had a hell of a time trying to figger out what he was saying. And the subtitles of Randall's (another mumbler) pirated copy seemed to come from a different movie altogether. Randy Quaid's character delivers the first bit of dialogue, ordering Ennis Del Mar (Ledger) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) to enter his office. He says a bunch of things--lots of words--and all the screen displays is "Help!" as his mouth keeps on working.

Since I wasn't planning on watching a comedy, I turned the subtitles off.

The reticence of Ennis Del Mar reflects one of the aspects of the film that I love: So much is left unsaid.

Speaking of depressing flicks: I just got me a DVD of Million Dollar Baby, which I haven't seen yet. I hear it's depressing as hell.
